Best Time to Visit Phuket 2026: Weather, Crowds & Travel Tips

Written by Cindy Updated May. 29, 2026

Most guides will tell you the same thing: the best time to visit Phuket is between November and March.

That is true if your priority is the safest beach weather and calm seas. But it is also the busiest and most expensive time of year. Hotels fill up quickly, popular beaches become crowded, and prices during Christmas and New Year can easily double compared to other months.

If your goal is not the weather, the best time can be different. Phuket changes a lot throughout the year. Some months are ideal for island-hopping and snorkeling. Others are better for quieter resorts, lower prices, surfing, or fewer crowds.

After visiting Phuket across different seasons, this is how I would simplify it:

If your priority is... Best Time to Visit Phuket Why It Works
Reliable beach weather & island-hopping January to early March Calm seas, sunny days, easiest conditions for first-time visitors
Luxury resorts at better value May & October Noticeably lower prices without the heaviest monsoon conditions
Family holidays during summer vacation Late July to August Fewer crowds, lower hotel rates, often workable mornings for sightseeing
Surfing & cafe culture June to September Best wave conditions on Phuket's west coast
Honeymoon with fewer crowds November or May Good balance between weather, atmosphere, and pricing

If this is your first time visiting Thailand and you want the least weather risk possible, I would still recommend January to early March.

But if you care more about value and quieter beaches, Phuket's so-called "green season" can work far better than many people expect.

Phuket Weather: Temperatures & Rainfall

Phuket sits close to the equator, so temperatures don't change that much during the year. Most days stay warm, usually somewhere between 24°C and 34°C.

Below is the yearly weather chart for Phuket, showing when the island gets its clearest skies and when the heavier monsoon rains usually arrive.

Phuket Average Temperature & Rainfall

The seasons in Phuket are divided into three different periods: the dry/high season, hot/shoulder season, and the rainy/low season. Each has its typical features.

November to March — The Dry Season (Best Weather, Highest Cost)

Coral islandCoral island

This is the easiest time to visit Phuket. The weather is dry, humidity is lower, and temperatures stay around 25–32°C.

The sea is calm and very clear during these months. Boat rides to the Phi Phi Islands and the Similan Islands are smooth.

However, you will be sharing this paradise with the rest of the world. During Christmas and New Year, hotel rates don't just increase—they can easily double. If you want this perfect weather window without peak-season crowds, avoid the festive block from December 20 to January 5.

For a quieter, more high-end stay, skip Patong and go for cliffside boutique resorts in Kamala or Surin Beach instead.

If you happen to be in Phuket during November's full moon, you may experience Loy Krathong. Do not follow the tourist crowds to Patong Beach. Instead, we can arrange a private evening longtail boat into the limestone canyons of Phang Nga Bay. Lighting your own lantern under the cliffs, in total silence, feels very different from the usual festival scenes.

If you want to combine Phuket with places like Phi Phi and Krabi, this is one of the best times to do a west coast island-hopping trip. You can check our 10-Day Thailand West Coast Island-Hopping Tour for inspiration.

April to June — The Smart Luxury "Sweet Spot"

Kata BeachKata Beach

April is when Phuket starts to heat up. It can reach around 35°C, and the air gets heavier as the island moves toward the early monsoon. If you melt under intense humidity, cross these months off your list.

But if you like a bit of a calculated travel gamble, it can actually be a good time. Why? Because hotel prices drop quite a lot. Luxury resorts that easily charge $1,200+ a night in January—like Trisara or Banyan Tree Phuket—often cut rates by around 30%.

Even better, the winter crowds disappear. In peak season, places like Maya Bay and James Bond Island can feel so crowded that you barely see the sand. By May, the speedboat traffic thins out, and you can step onto the beach with just a handful of other travelers.

April also brings Songkran. In Phuket, Bangla Road and Kata Beach get very lively, with water fights and a lot of energy in the streets. It's fun, but the heat is no joke.

If you're visiting around this time, it usually works better to go out in the morning, take it slow in the middle of the day, and head out again later when it cools down.

May to October — The Green & Monsoon Season

Phuket Old Town
Phuket Old Town

This is Phuket's official rainy season, and also the most misunderstood period of the year.

But don't let the term "rainy season" put you off. In reality, it rarely rains all day. The usual pattern is bright, sunny mornings followed by a short but heavy downpour in the late afternoon or evening. These quick bursts of rain often feel like a reset, washing everything clean and turning the landscape a deep, lush green that looks great in photos.

If you're planning a lot of island hopping, though, you may run into some interruptions. Speedboats to Phi Phi can be delayed or canceled due to rough seas. The Similan Islands are also closed during this period, which is worth knowing if diving is part of your plan.

When it rains, you can explore Phuket Old Town, or you can book a massage at Banyan Tree Spa Bangtao, which often offers 50% off "Green Season" packages

For surfers, this is actually one of the best times of year. The monsoon winds bring consistent waves, especially around Kata Beach.

The Worst Time to Visit Phuket

September is the peak of the monsoon season, with heavy rain, occasional flash-flooding in low-lying areas, and rough sea currents.

West-coast beaches fly solid Red Flags, and boat tours to Phi Phi are frequently canceled at the last minute due to 3-meter swells. If your dream vacation involves sunbathing and crystal-clear snorkeling, skip September entirely.

I once got caught in a storm on a boat back from the Phi Phi Islands — it's a ride I never want to go through again.

If you have to travel during the late summer school holidays, it's better to shift your dates to late July or August. Otherwise, choose to head to Koh Samui instead, which enjoys a different, much sunnier weather window during this period.

4. Does it rain all day during Phuket's rainy season?
Direct Answer: No, it rarely rains all day during the rainy season (May to October). The typical monsoon pattern consists of bright, sunny mornings followed by short, sharp tropical showers lasting 1 to 2 hours in the late afternoon.
